LIVING HISTORY EVENTS
The First Maryland: 1st USA at Reisterstown FestThe First Maryland Volunteer Infantry portrays Civil War soldiers. The group has been a member of the Reisterstown Rec Council for eight years, and participated in the festival for the past nine years. Always concerned about history, the community, and our servicemen, the First Maryland looks for events that benefit the public. This has included Rose Hill Children's Museum in Frederick, Rose Hill Cemetery in Hagerstown, Hanover Hospital in Hanover, PA, the Buggy Museum in Mifflinburg, PA, our servicemen through Operation: Christmas Tree, and Reisterstown through the festival. This year, the group is stretching itself, and becoming more involved with other community projects, such as the Reisterstown Improvement Association. The group is always accepting applications for membership. The only qualifications are a desire to be outdoors and to learn. For middle and high school students, service learning hours are available. Come learn about history by becoming a part of it.

Schedule at the Reisterstown Festival:

Dance: The Reenactors will be holding a dance at the second stage on Saturday, September 10, from 7 to. Music will be provided by DJ Ray. The music represents a wide variety from the 1860s to modern day, from pop to hip hop, from fast to slow. There is bound to be something for everyone at this dance. It's a come-as-you are, or come dressed to the nines. Be sure to stop in to see the Civil War ball gowns, especially as the ladies do more current dances. So dust off your ball gown, or your clogging shoes, or your best ballroom ettiquette, and drop in for what is sure to be a great time. And get a great view of the fireworks, too!

Generals Ulysses S Grant and Robert E Lee are slated to appear at the festival this year. Ulysses S Grant defeated Robert E Lee's Army of Northern Virginia by waging total war. Despite this, the two men held no animosity for each other. Albert Keyser portrays Ulysess Grant with the determination, heart, and heartache certainly felt by the man who led so many Union soldiers to their deaths in the battles that would ultimately win the war for the Union. Equally well portrayed is Phil Carpenter's Robert E Lee. Carpenter has studied Lee for years, and portrays him as the gentle, religious, and forthright commander who won the hearts of his men and the south, even in defeat. Be sure to stop by the Living History area to meet and chat with these two men. Your view of the War Between the States will never be the same.

Civil War HatsReisterstown History: What was Reisterstown's role in the Civil War? It's a good question. There was only one small action at the corner of Cockeysmill Road and Main Street. In 1864, the Confederate cavalry rode in. A local citizen began to fire at them. Before the Confederates could respond, another local citizen pulled a pistol and shot the first in the back. This little event covers the real story of Reisterstown. A Union officer was charged with finding out how information was getting to the Confederacy. He traced the spies to Reisterstown. What he found here astonished him. The young ladies would take picnic lunches to the Union soldiers stationed at Soldiers Delight. They would get the young men drunk, and pump them for information. That information was immediately sent south. Want to know more? Visit the Living History area and ask.
